The Scoring Process For the Film Buried

The Scoring Process
Below are 10 short videos documenting my process for scoring the feature film Buried.
Taken on my phone over the final 8 days it took from spotting to final delivery of the score,
watch what sleep deprivation looks like as I attempt to explain the process!
Many people have asked how I go about writing music for films, so I thought I'd make these videos.
Like other film composers, I use different processes based on the project at hand
but for the most part we all follow the same basic skeleton.
The final movie soundtrack can be found at the bottom of the page and is also available online
on most major music platforms.
Day 10 - Spotting the Film
Hear about how composers and directors work out where music should be in the film through the process, we call Spotting.
On this project, due to speed, I did this myself but with more time would usually do this with the director, which for a feature film could easily take one full day to do.
Before spotting, I watch the film many times over, which is mostly silent apart from dialogue and begin to map out where I feel music should and should not go. What you're looking for is emotional 'heart beats' and action that requires scoring.
I'll also explain how much music you'll have at the end and how to work that out.
